Lower Back Pain
Is S-1 the same as coccyx?

Hi all! I am having lumbar issues L-4,L-5, S-1, also my "butt" or tailbone hurt extremely bad. I sit on half the chair so by bottom hangs half off, when I sit. I stand mostly all day. I can't even ride in the car. My MRI showed some problems with my S-1 and I was reading where someone mentioned some screws breaking in theirs S-1 and their tailbone hurting. Is it the same thing? I do not go to the NS until the 28th and I am thinking he's not going to believe how much my butt hurts. But if S-1 and coccyx are the same thing I am having hope thats where my pain is!! When I had my fall I went to my family doc and told him about my coccyx and he could wiggle it and he said, "yep, its broken". Does walking help? I ride my bike with my butt bone hanging off the back of my seat. It's funny to see! I know they will tell me to lose weight. I'm not that overweight but they always say that when you have a back problem. I feel like there is a bright light now for my butt pain if someone says its the same thing!!!!! Yipppeeee!! Thanks ya'll...Melissa Party

Coccyx

Hello Melissarod,

Coccyx is the small bone right at the end of the spine, S1 is the last vertebrae that forms the TOP of the scarum (a set of fused bones in a triangle shape) - the coccyx sits like a walnut at the bottom of this triangle.

There is a difference. Lumbar is the bottom of your spine before your behind. The dimples in your lower back are approximately where S1 sits.

I hope that helps.
