Forteo? Anybody here using it?
Just wondering if anyone here has experience with the osteoporosis drug Forteo? It is injected once daily. My surgeon suggested I begin taking it because my BMD prior to surgery was a little low and my bone graft was not happening.

Know anything about this Forteo stuff? ---Mazy
yes...forteo is designed for those who have fractured and/or who are at a high risk of fracture where a bisph. (actonel, fosomax or boniva) will take too long to build BMD. forteo will build BMD faster and has corresponding fracture prevention data as do the bisph.
however when forteo came on the market it carried a black box warning because it was associated with giving bone cancer to rats (it should be noted the type of rats were susceptible to cancer) also they were given waaaaay more than the human dosage would be allowed. I only think there was 1 human cancer report from it which they do not even know if it can be tied to it. **it is always good to know the adverse events though.
however this is now seen as a miniscule risk since forteo can only be used on a limited basis....Once it is finished its course the patient is then put on actonel. the reason for this is that bone turns over very frequently in the body and all gains will be lost when the therapy is ended unless a bisph. is added.
i also know it has an easy pen like needle delivery system with a needle the size of an eyelash. I believe it is 28 daily injections with a cost of $700 per month...
That is all i remember about it.
