sciatic pain in left leg/butt preventing sleep
I can't buy a new bed, but I'm not sure that'd help the matter at all. I have a nice, firm-ish bed now and I'm in complete agony as it is.
I can't sleep on my side, even with a pillow in between my knees. On my back, with a pillow under my knees/legs has been suggested, but doesn't help a lick.
I'll be feeling okay at night, and then when I lay down, the sciatic pain shoots thru my butt and into my leg/knee area, causing excruciating pain and makes me unable to find a comfie position.
Anyone else relate to this?
Any tips?
I need help.. I feel like I'm losing my mind, i'm so tired.

This is something new for me (3-4 weeks now). It is a little better right now but I went 2 weeks w/out sleeping because of that irritating pain in my lower spine and left buttocks.
I can offer you NO solution but can tell you that you are NOT alone with this!
Cervical myelopathy, 15 surgeries to date, Severe OA, bilateral knee replacements, DDD, 13 MRI’s, 4 sets of spinal cortisone procedures and dozens of cortisone shots in other areas for OA. Upcoming scheduled surgeries include laminectomy and removal of synovial cyst located at left facet joint of L4-L5 (may require fusion); Right resection of A-C joint (left was done 12 years ago, by far the most painful of all my surgeries)
...living with this problem for over a year. The only position I've found that helps at all is on my stomach, or flat on my back. But after surgery I wasn't allowed to lay on my stomach for 6 weeks, which left me flat on my back. Problem with that is that I roll over in my sleep... then wake up with shooting pain in my butt and thigh... sometimes all the way to my toes. It's gotten better since the surgery, but it's not gone, and still wakes me up several times a night.
You're definitely not alone. Do you take anything at night? I take naproxin and tylenol.
Discectomy for L5-S1 hernaition on June 9th. July 18 was 1st anniversary of injury, finally getting some relief.
Are you able to sleep on your opposite side? I have the same problem if I sleep on my right side(even with the knee pillow). After nights of waking myself in pain, I started wearing workout shorts with pockets to bed and I put a tennis ball in the right one. Now I don't turn on that side anymore!
That's a great tip! I never thought of a tennis bell in the pocket. I tried putting a pillow behind me, but it always gets moved. Thanks.
i carnt offer any help but i can tell you that you are not on your own.i came in to chat on here last night because i could not sleep again!! its been over 5 years since i got more than 3 hours sleep in one go..i have the electrical ajustable bed with the memory foam matterass.and another bed with a top of the range TEMPUR matterass but despit what the tv ads say i dont get a good night sleep on any of them.leg pain is a nightmear i feel for you ..i am dreading going to bed tonight because i know that in a few hours i will have to get up an have more pain killers .then if i am lucky i may get an hour or so on my recliner..its no fun my friend..i only wish i had the answer .i am a strong person but it is now getting to me big time..i do hope you find the answer ,if you do please contact me ..STRAKER
in 1997 i had my first op .it was i laminectomy at L4/L5 .then in Nov 2007 i had a revisit of the 1997 op and a bilateral discectomy at S1..i have DDD and spinal stenosis i have recently been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome {i have the arterial type and i have an extra cervical rib .i have just found out that i have a partial L6 fused to my S1 and i have chrones disease in constant pain now for 11 years .i am married to kathryn i am 42 years old.
I have degenerative disc disease, recently diagnosed, and the ONLY way that I can sleep well (four to six hours pain free) is in a recliner. I recline as far back as the recliner will go and sleep like a baby. If I try sleeping on a flat surface, hard, soft, or in between, I have chronic pain whenever I move my legs or turnover. I have hardly no pain on a recliner.....try it and good luck.
I can relate too! No fun, is it?
I've been dealing with this problem for over 3 years now and have tried every trick in the book (well, except the tennis ball-thanks to the one who suggested that!). I'm trying to save up some money so that I can buy a Select Comfort bed, but it's going to take me a LONG time before I can afford that!
Sometimes I have to just prop myself up to a sitting up position with lots of pillows behind my lower back and sleep that way (need to buy a recliner but don't have money for that either right now). I've just relented to the fact that no matter what I'll have to move around a lot when I try to sleep. I tend to go a long time w/o sleep or even just a little bit but eventually I end up crashing because I get so mentally and physically exhausted.
All I can tell you is to take it one day (or night!) at a time. Perhaps you can get a prescription sleeping pill like Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerom, etc? Might be worth a shot. I would definitely mention it to your doc and keep mentioning it every time you see him/her until it's resolved.
Sorry I'm not much help but I, too, just wanted you to know you're not alone. I wish you the best of luck-keep us posted, OK?
Take care of you...

I started taking Neurontin, it not only helped with the nerve pain but also helps me sleep. At first I would get lethargic during the day but that lasted only a few days. Hope you find some relief. No sleep is brutal.
