upper back pain when lifting at the gym

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me pinpoint my injury. I have a sharp stinging pain located on my upper middle back, kinda right next to my spine. I feel the pain when I do standing bent over rows, seated rows with a close grip and dead lifts. I've gotten this before and it usually goes away within a week, but this time its lingering around a little longer. It gets worse with every rep but subsides when i finish an excercise. Would really appreciate it if anyone has any idea what it is. Thanks


Stop doing things that cause you pain

Please stop any activities that are causing you pain. Your body is trying to tell you that something is wrong. Not listening to it will only make it worse. I would recommend going to a doctor and fully understanding what is wrong with your back before lifting/bending once again.

I would definitely agree that if this is hurting you , you should stop those type of exercises for a while. If you haven't had any previous back/spine problems this could very likely be a muscle strain/pull/etc. If its a deep muscle, it can very likely cause you a lot of pain and difficult to control If this continues for more than 4-5 days (without exercises) then I would contact your PCP.
Another sign that it could be muscle related is IF you do not have any pain or discomfort going down your leg. There are some general 'warning' signs of disc problems. One being pain going down you leg. That is the result of a disc impinging on the spinal cord. Many times, if it is a disc problem, you do NOT feel the pain directly in the area from the damage spot.

I would take off a few days from your exercises and use some anti-inflammatory over the counter medicines (ie NSAIDS) I would also try moist warm heat. Showering a couple times a day and the use of a heating pad could help

I agree with sceptrum, stop any activity that hurts an area of your body. there is good and bad pain, obviosly this is a bad pain. there may be muscle issues, or a spinal issue. go see a doc befor you do something that will stop your activity. anay weight training puts strain on your spine, what maybe you can do is lay off for a week or so, and see if the pain isnt persistant. a bonus is that your body will be sore when you begin again the first week, then you will see gains! adaptation syndrom, kinda like when ya switch up your routine and ya make gains. to qualify myself, i trained for 8+ years, 650+# shrugs,1300 leg press,and 300# cable cross overs and some others. all this is to say be careful,and keep on enjoying your chosen sport!
