Today I’m going to talk to you about some red flag symptoms that could be a sign that your low back pain is a medical emergency.
All of these are pretty rare but they are good to be aware of if you’re suffering from low back pain and have any of these symptoms as they could warrant an emergency visit.
If you develop numbness in the saddle region, which refers to the pelvic region, the inner thigh, and the groin region that’s new and sudden, this could be a sign of a medical emergency.
If you develop weakness of your bowel and bladder such as inability to control or difficulty
starting a stream, this is also a sign of a medical emergency.
These could be a sign of what is called the cauda equina or something that’s putting pressure on the sacral nerves.
If you develop unrelenting pain, meaning the pain does not get better or change by resting, taking medication, or modifying positions, this could also be a sign of something serious.
If you develop night sweats, fever, chills, along with unrelenting pain this could be a sign that you may have either a spinal infection or spinal tumor.
If you develop sudden progressive leg weakness or numbness this could also be a reason to seek urgent medical attention as you may have something that’s putting a significant amount of pressure on the nerve roots of your spine.
Finally, if you suffer a trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident or a slip and fall, and develop moderate to severe back pain especially if it’s with progressive neurologic symptoms this would be a good reason to visit the emergency room as well.
