Hi, I'm Natalie here with Veritas Health, and I'm going to give you guys some information on using ice therapy to help with pain. Ice can be helpful for dealing with pain because helps reduce inflammation, helps reduce blood flow to that area, and also helps reduce pain overall. It can be used with acute injuries such as an ankle sprain or anything that happens that causes pain and can be used when there's swelling present as well. When using ice, I would recommend for using for about 10 to 20 minutes at a time and not to exceed 20 minutes, as this can increase your chance of having damage to the skin. When using an ice pack, you should always have a towel or a layer clothing in between you, so it's not directly on the skin, unless it's a product that's designed to directly be placed on the skin. There are several options you can use.
At your drugstore, you can find an instant cold pack. Oftentimes, these can be designed to apply directly to the skin. So if it says that, you can follow those directions. You can use a gel pack as well.
These are helpful because they can really conform to the area that needs ice most. With this I would recommend using a towel over it just so it's not applied directly on the skin. You can also use a homemade ice pack or if you don't have any materials on site, you can use just a frozen bag of peas or vegetables. Something else you can use ice for is an ice massage where you take some direct ice, apply it to your skin, but the key is to keep it moving so it doesn't apply too much cold in one area. Ice massage can be done up to about five minutes, and this could be especially helpful when done directly on sore, painful muscles.
