Are you struggling with forward head posture? If so, here's how to fix it. Forward head posture is conditioned where people develop poor posture through their cervical spine. This leads to your head being not directly over your body, but instead tipped forward. This puts excess strain on the neck and can cause cervical pain and dysfunction later down the road. An important way to treat this is through regular postural exercises. These can help strengthen the muscles that are deep in your spine, your deep neck flexors, which are ones that control your head position. A great exercise for this are chin tucks, where you work on sliding your head straight back and strengthening those deep neck flexors. Pec stretching is also helpful, as this can help open up the front of your chest and improve your upright posture. Another important exercise are strengthening exercises the scapular muscles, trunk muscles and core muscles. These all help improve the endurance of this area and can help you maintain upright posture for longer. Modifying your activity and regular behavior is important as well. If you work at a desk or computer, you should be very mindful of the ergonomic setup of your workplace. If you're working on a computer, make sure that the computer screen is directly in front of you and your eyes are in line with the top 1/3 of that computer screen. You should make sure your forearms are parallel with the ground. Your knees are bent to 90 degrees, and your hips are bent to 90 degrees. If you have a chair with a headrest, this can be a good reminder to help you keep your head back against that headrest. If you are spending a lot of time on your cell phone, be sure you're not using it down here, which encourages more forward head posture, and instead hold it in front of you at eye level. You can even put your elbows on a table or pillow to help support you as you do that. Finally, you can use what's called a cervical pillow. This is a pillow that's a narrow tube that goes just behind your cervical spine and helps keep your head in a little bit more neutral position while you're sleeping. So sleeping.
