Hi, I'm Natalie here with Veritas Health, and today I'm going to give you two walking tips to avoid SI joint pain. The first tip I have is make sure you're walking with good posture. This means you want to be nice and upright with your shoulders drawn back and down and relaxed, shoulders stacked up evenly over the hips and then walking with a good upright neck posture. When you walk, you also want to focus on having a good heel to toe foot strike. Second tip I have for you is listen to your body.
A question I get a lot as a physical therapist is should I keep walking if it hurts? And I give people an explanation that they can use to help them understand if they should keep pushing through the pain or not. So if you start walking and you have SI joint pain, but it's tolerable, meaning less than five out of ten, not super sharp or severe, and you keep walking and it stays at that it's okay to keep going even if that pain is present. If you start walking and then your pain jumps up past tolerable, so maybe more than a five out of ten starting to get really sharp, starting to get very severe, or you find yourself limping you should probably stop walking for now and maybe focus on something a little gentler, such
as biking, swimming, or ellipticaling until you're able to get back to walking. Finally, if you find yourself walking and your pain decreases that's great. Keep walking.
Another question I get a lot is what type of footwear is best."
This really also depends on the person. If you find your more comfortable in something that has a lot of arch support, a lot of cushion and more structure, and that's going to help you stay more active then that's the type of footwear you should use. Some people find they're a little bit more comfortable in something minimalist that may mimic barefoot walking and provide less support then that's appropriate for their feet as well.
